Our EcoStance

General Growth Properties is committed to maintaining a healthy environment for future generations. We embrace sustainability as an intrinsic part of how we do business, in the goals we set, the decisions we make, and the places we develop and operate.

As the owner and manager of more than 174 million square feet of real estate, we have a tremendous opportunity and responsibility to help sustain the environment. Our environmental programs improve our business, contribute to the well-being of the communities we serve and set a positive example.

We seek to demonstrate meaningful progress in our areas of highest impact. For GGP, those areas are energy conservation and waste reduction.

Energy Conservation Programs

Electrical consumption has been managed using a variety of operational strategies, resulting in a downward trend. Since 2005, this approach has delivered cumulative savings in the retail portfolio in excess of 328.7 million kWh, which is equivalent to the annual electrical needs of 33,977 U.S. households.

  • Heating and cooling equipment replacements provide increased energy efficiency, reducing equipment energy consumption by approximately 17%.
  • Cool white roofs reduce energy consumption, abate urban heat impacts and offer opportunities for end-of-life recycling.
  • Energy management systems automate consumption efficiencies at 95% of our regional malls.
  • In 2010, 51 malls participated in demand response programs that coordinate energy consumption with local providers to curtail electricity in times of peak demand.
  • In late 2010, GGP converted more than 50,000 incandescent lights to energy efficient LED lights in more than 135 malls. The new LED lamps last longer, lower carbon emissions and reduce energy consumption by at least 85%. This lighting change led to installation of 52,000 Holiday LED lights across 70 malls.

    Reuse and Recycling Programs

    • GGP ensures that management of the trash concession maximizes all localized recycling opportunities. These retailer recycling programs save nearly a half million mature trees annually and divert from landfills millions of pounds of cardboard, aluminum, office paper, plastic bottles, hangers, wrap, bags and glass. Additional categories recycled by GGP Operations include light bulbs, batteries, computer equipment, construction debris and organics such as used cooking grease and compostable food waste.
    • Used fixtures and building materials are donated to Habitat for Humanity's ReStore program. To date, Habitat Restore donations diverted 522,647 pounds of construction waste from landfills.
    • Reusable storefront barricade installations, environmentally friendly alternatives to drywall, are used in many markets.
